About the Berwick Area
The town of Berwick is a suburb of the city of Melbourne, situated approximately 45 km to the south-east of the city’s main business district and currently covered by the local government area of the city of Casey. Originally named by one of the town’s earliest settlers, Berwick owes its name to the English town of Berwick-on-Tweed, located in Northumberland.
Berwick has a long and colourful history, dating back to the mid 19th century when the very first store, post office and hotel were established. Agriculture long formed the backbone of Berwick’s economy and growth, with the Berwick Agricultural Society having been started as far back as 1484 and still going strong today.
Further on during the 20th century, Melbourne began to spread ever-further eastwards toward Berwick, with land around the area becoming increasingly popular for homebuyers as new developments shot up left right and centre, all of which quite sublimely retained the original character of the 19th century township.
Nowadays, Berwick is a bustling town will all of the facilities, attractions and convenience to be expected of any modern suburb, though such features as the old-library building, distinctive boulevards and quaint gardens, much of the 19th century English Village feel has been retained superbly.
Berwick is also an important business hub for the area, not only in terms of commercial operations. Many of the town’s accountants, tax agents and other such firms are contracted far and wide in light of high overall reputations. Accountancy services in Berwick have long been trusted as some of the finest to be found in Australia, with general accounting and tax management services available for clients ranging from small, private business owners to huge international enterprises.
On the more recreational side of the town, the Berwick Inn continues to be one of the most treasured and popular tourist draws in the whole region, having been licensed back in 1857 and still running strong today. Although a number of modifications and extension were afforded to the premises over the years, few places the world over offer such a feeling of stepping back in time as the Berwick Inn.
The Old cheese factory adds further charm to the old-world atmosphere of Berwick, having been hand-built back in the 1860s and still standing proud today. True, it may be functioning as an art gallery now, but such has certainly not taken away any of the charm of yesteryear.
Getting out and about is also a must, with the Bunyip Byways Tourism Trail offering the perfect escape into the countryside for those craving a little liaison with Mother Nature. The trail is clearly marked out by over 300 signs and winds through endless historic sites, natural landmarks and hospitality services.
Berwick has achieved what many have long strived for but seldom accomplished, by blending the very best of days gone by with all the
conveniences of the modern world in a truly seamless fashion.
